10 Small Business Travel Packing Tips for Entrepreneurs

Consider these ten savvy packing tips to save a lot of energy and time on your next business trip or vacation.

Entrepreneurs are always on the go — whether for business or pleasure, travel seems to be a part of the territory. Have a meeting with new suppliers? Heading to speak at a conference? Or maybe you’re jetting off to an uninhabited island and going off the grid for a few days? You’ve booked your trip and your airfare is paid; now all you need to do is pack. That means it’s time to freak out, right? Wrong! Don’t stress!

Below are ten great tips on how to pack the right way to save time and use your space wisely. Whether you’re headed on a long journey or just a short weekend, these savvy packing tips will save you a lot of energy and time.

1.Plan ahead.

Planning ahead can prevent throwing random items, unorganized, into your suitcase. Prepare first, so that you can bring everything you want and need on your trip. Planning ahead will give you time to be sure all your items are cleaned and ready to go.

2. Lay it on the line.

That is, lay everything out that you plan to pack. This will allow you to see exactly what you will be able to fit into your suitcase, and where to put it. You’ll actually finish faster if you lay your items out first and pack second, instead of just packing all at once.

3. Make a list, and then purge.

First, create a list of items that you plan to bring. Next, decide which five – ten things you can live without while on vacation. If you want to save on space or try to keep all your items in one carry-on bag, develop an urge to purge. Most importantly, a list will keep you from forgetting important things you need — like that pitch deck to show potential VCs’ — for example.

4. Carry on, my friend.

If you can, reduce your list to items that will fill a carry-on. You will save time at the airport, and won’t have to risk your luggage getting lost and making you late for a really important meeting.

5. Choose a color palette.

For those of us unable to pick out which shoes and accessories to bring, there’s a solution. Select a color and stick with it for all outfits. Pack one pair of good-looking, high-quality, and comfortable shoes that will go with your chosen palette.

6. Stuff those shoes.

Socks, jewelry, undergarments, and other small items can be placed in your shoes. This will not only helps with space, but you’ll know where your small items are when you need them, too.

7. Roll your clothes.

This is a very common tip for packing. Clothes take up less space when rolled and, surprisingly, they suffer less wrinkling than folded clothes.

8. Organize chronologically.

Put the outfits that you plan to wear during the first half of your vacation on top, and the second half on the bottom. This really comes in handy when you’re halfway through your trip and your suitcase is still as organized as when it was first opened.

9. Organize conveniently.

Ever get stuck behind someone fishing through their carry-on for a wallet, passport, or boarding pass? You can’t afford to lose these types of items, but you need easy access to them as well. So find a secure, safe, and convenient spot for them.

10. Plan for add-ons.

Finally, remember that you may add items along the way, so leave room or create a place for these items. If you think you won’t have enough space, pack a separate, flattened bag you can use on the return trip. You definitely don’t want to board a plane carrying a plastic bag full of dirty laundry!
