As you build a small business, and gain marked success, it’s inevitable that others will ask you to share what you’ve learned with others who desire the same level of success or more. This opens the door to public speaking opportunities – a great way to build your business and your personal brand.

Your mission, if you will accept it, is to engage your audience with a dynamic message that is meaningful; resonates in their minds; and creates value.

When it comes to public speaking, the obstacles you will encounter include, but aren’t limited to: sufficient preparation, practice, and targeted purpose.

Here are four ways to successfully deliver your message to an engaged audience at your next event.

1. Know your desired end result.

Before the begin preparing for your next public speaking event it’s important to know what you are doing and how you plan to make it a success.

What key messages do you want your audience to walk away with? How do you want your audience to feel? Inspired, informed, motivated, or empathic? How will your message impact their lives?

Deciding what you want your end result to be will help you shape your message and engage your audience.

2. Know your audience’s demographics and psychographics.

How can you help or inform people without understanding their problems or desired state?

For example, before a doctor sees and diagnoses a patient, he or she typically takes a look at their medical history, inquires about family related illnesses, gauges stress levels, and even inquires about the patients’ profession.

I’m not suggesting that you need every single detail about the audience your speaking to, but at least find out what their problems are and how you can solve them. Such as biggest challenges, median age, male and female split, purchase habits, political views, etc.

It is important to really know who you are speaking to, so that you can better address their pain points, share a relevant presentation and provide optimal solutions.
