Winston Churchill once said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” A major contributor to continuing is motivation. Which begs the question: How do you stay motivated in business?

“Running a business is like riding on a roller coaster. Although it is fun and exciting, there will be times when you’ll be scared and feel powerless. During the bad times there isn’t much you can do, other than to keep on pushing forward,” according to Neil Patel, the co-founder of Crazy Egg and KISSmetrics.

How Successful Entrepreneurs Stay Motivated

Being your own boss is rewarding, exciting and challenging, thus we all look for ways to remain motivated and inspired. So, we asked 35 successful entrepreneurs to share what keeps them going and here’s what they had to say:

1. “‘Each new day brings an opportunity to get it right.’ This mantra simply means if you don’t accomplish all your goals, to-do lists, or even land that big sales contract, there is always tomorrow to get it right. Tomorrow always brings a new opportunity to be better, stronger, more efficient, and get it right. Simple and true.”

– Erika A. Salter, Founder/Executive Producer of Salter Entertainment Group, LLC

2. “If I don’t take the initiative to act, someone else will. I keep a notepad next to my bed so that I can capture those late night or middle of the night ideas and act on them the next day. Motivation is telling myself that “There may be better ideas out there, but I will not be out-worked by my competitors”.”

– John Ostman, VP Sales/Marketing and Creative Director of Probus OneTouch / Snap Agency

3. “I know working hard to grow my business will allow me to give back to my community. I have always wanted to make a difference in the lives around me, and I see my business as a catalyst to allow me to do that. Plus, it’s a heck of a lot of fun.”

– Erika Welsh, Co-Founder at Wild Squirrel Nut Butter

4. “Today will be the day” and “If this idea does not work I have 4 or 5 more to try”. I get up visualizing that my apps will get really popular soon and, if they do not work as expected, I will just develop another idea that will be successful.

– Alberto Daccarett Armijo, Co-Founder of VocaBoca and Noneed2call

5. “Visiting my friends at their offices and seeing them working in cubicles. That sort of corporate lifestyle is the exact thing I don’t want with my life because it would stifle my creativity and keep me from expanding my horizons and success!”

– Betsy Hauser Founder and President of Flexiruggz LLC

6. “Socializing with successful people. By socializing with people that are more successful than you are, it will give you a mental push and help break that mental barrier that’s stopping you from actually making millions.”

– Joe Martin, President of Merchandize Liquidators, LLC

7. “Establish strong, yet effortless communication channels for your customers to provide you feedback (an easy-to-find email, occasional surveys, sending a personal email to a customer, social media, etc). Not only is this a good customer service practice, but you will be surprised by the number of purchasers who are advocates of your brand. Receiving positive feedback and reassuring messages from happy customers is inspirational and keeps me motivated.”

– Vincent Ko, Co-Founder and Chief Panda of PANDA Sunglasses

8. “Writing down my ideas and frustrations; and reaffirming to myself what the “endgame” is, keeps me motivated. I also made an agreement to always do my best each and every day such that no particular day can be called a failure.

– Ciara L. Vesey, Creator of “Confessions of a Law School Nobody” Online

9. “I’m driven to become and remain successful. Many entrepreneurs strive to build and sell their company. My goal is to grow and sustain my company. As my business grows so does my responsibility. The more employees you have, the more lives you’re responsible for. The ultimate motivation when growing a brand is to sustain the same level of attention to one client or one thousand.”

– Garcia Desinor, Owner of Level Properties

10. “Peer to Peer Accountability. This is a crucial step I take. Look for another business owner in the same or totally different profession that you can talk to on a weekly or daily basis if possible to discuss ideas, challenges, and triumphs. This is a great way to keep both parties accountable.”

– Adam Martin, Founder of Laabn Social Haircare Inc.

11. “Put your personal money on the line.”

– Nolan Watson, President & CEO of Sandstorm Gold Ltd. and Sandstorm Metals & Energy Ltd.

12. “Find new opportunities. As an entrepreneur the moment you become complacent and accept where your business currently stands is the day it’s time to move on. Motivation and drive comes from within but you add fuel to the fire by constantly seeking perfection.”

– Josh Neblett, CEO of GreenCupboards

13. “‘Total Domination’ is the phrase I encourage my coworkers and interns to live by — in and out of the office. Always aim higher than average and do not stop until all expectations are accomplished entirely.”

– Alex Karas, Executive Director of Rock the Aisle Bridal

14. “By fighting the small battles. I get joy in overcoming obstacles, and by celebrating after a small win. This includes rewarding myself for a job well done. You can get overwhelmed by focusing too much on the big picture.”

– Will Curran, President of Endless Entertainment

15. “surround yourself with people who are striving and pursing success for themselves and those who will encourage you to succeed in life as well.”

– Juanita Hines, Owner of Regional Consulting
