1. I came up with the concept of Wave Accounting when:

My business partner James Lochrie and myself were looking to start a new venture together. We talked about many different concepts but given his background in small business tax and my background in technology, specifically around sales, marketing and business development, we thought a small business accounting solution would be a great fit for our skill sets, and Wave Accounting was born.

Wave Accounting is a ridiculously easy, totally free online accounting application for small businesses worldwide. Ultimately we understand the pain that average small business owners feel with this part of their business, and we’re passionate about taking away as much of it as possible.

2. Ambition:

To help make small businesses more successful by taking away the hassles involved with running their business. Often times the back-office tasks take away from their time to move their business ahead or spend time with their families and friends. We want to help free them up to get back to what they love doing.

3. One day I hope to:

Feel a sense of accomplishment that we’ve built a great company.

4. Current obsession:

Getting Wave to a smartphone near you…

5. Favorite business tool:

Tethering on my iPhone, so I can connect to work from wherever I need to be. With a young family, this adds some much needed flexibility.

6. Favorite book(s):

Founders at Work: Stories of Startups’ Early Days

7. Best place to unwind:

My parent’s cottage with my wife and kids.

8. Would love to have dinner with:

Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi economist and founder of the Grameen Bank, for his work on helping the world’s population start their own small businesses and gain fulfillment through that process by providing microcredit to help clients establish creditworthiness and financial self-sufficiency.

9. You can never have too many:

Smart people around you. Trading ideas and thoughts with smart people drives me. I can’t get enough…

10. Essential business tip:

Solve a pain point you’ve experienced yourself. It makes product development so much clearer. “If Kirk can use it anyone can…” is kind of our rallying cry. I’m not sure if I should be offended or not?
